Babli’s (Tamannaah) father runs a successful akhada in their Haryana village. The gym’s USP is that it successfully churns out club-bound bouncers in Delhi year after year. Babli grew up around pehalwans, knows all their tricks and can lift equal if not more weight than them.
She is the ultimate tomboy who talks to her buffaloes, likes to drink copious amounts of lassi, eats 12 rotis at once and loves to ride a Bullet. She is struck by the phoren returned son of her former class teacher. She finds out that she is based in Delhi, convinces her father that she wants to work as a bouncer and lands there.
She becomes friends with him, but after a while she realizes that there is a huge gap between them. This moment of revelation convinces her to improve. He starts learning English and even after so many years he successfully completes 10th. And she also realizes that she doesn’t need a man to complete herself.

Babli Bouncer Movie Ott Release
It finally got an OTT release. His feel-good recipe is just right for the medium. Madhur Bhandarkar is known for his dark, gritty, slice-of-life films, so it’s a surprise to see him attempt an action comedy. It’s his mildest film yet. The grim beginning of the film actually convinces you that you are in for a rough ride, but otherwise the film is full of sunshine and positivity.
A woman who wants to become a bouncer – that’s something unusual, but unfortunately the film does not go beyond the one-line plot. Being a trained wrestler herself, it doesn’t take long for her to become a bouncer. But what then? Yes, he’s going through a journey of self-discovery, but we’ve seen it all before.
The film reiterates the importance of girls making their own money and waiting for true love to happen instead of walking away from attraction. And that they should first learn to love themselves and accept themselves as they are is the key to fulfillment.
Most of the dialogues in the film are in chaste Haryanvi, especially in the earlier parts. He wants to get used to it. The writers tried to keep things real. Abhishek Bajaj’s character doesn’t fall in love with gaon ki gori, but finds it uncouth and doesn’t hesitate to say so. Sahil Vaid plays the childhood beast who secretly carries the torch for Babli.
He risks heartbreak and melts away his feelings instead of bottling them up and suffering in silence. Babli’s character is full of quirks and idiosyncrasies. While she wants to hone her skills and complete her education, she also realizes that it is her eccentricity that makes her unique.
The role has been written for Tamannaah and you can see that she is having fun writing it. She is known for her acting skills down south but in the Hindi industry her films like Himmatwala and Humshakals did not create any magic. So, Babli Bouncer is a comeback film for her in Hindi cinema.
He grabs the chance with both hands and runs with it. Her Haryanvi accent is on point and so is her comic timing. She makes Babli completely believable and never deviates from character. The action sequences with her feel real and don’t look like the usual superhuman stunts we see in our movies. It’s about time her talent was noticed by Hindi filmmakers.
Tamannaah is the highlight of the film and carries it on her shoulders. Watch the film for her natural acting and for its empowering message.

Review: Babli belongs to Haryanvi village adjacent to Delhi which is famous for providing bouncers to clubs in the city. A chance meeting with Viraj (Abhishek Saxena) changes her life and she decides to take a job as a bouncer in a club in Delhi. In the end, when Viraj leaves his heartbroken, he finds true happiness in educating himself and taking his job and career seriously.
Madhur Bhandarkar returns with a directorial venture after five years and recaptures a story that revolves around a woman’s longing for love and identifying her true strength and identity.
Watching the film, you can feel that it was made by someone who knows the rhythms of this kind of cinema, set in a commercial space. While Babli Bouncer isn’t a patch on Bhandarkar’s previous National Award-winning work, he doesn’t seem to have relaxed completely on such stories.
The subject of the film is one of its plus points. The life of a bouncer, let alone a bouncer, has never been properly explored in film in India. Barely visible bouncer women lead a hard life that was portrayed in a lighter vein. However, the writing falters here. Babli faces obstacles on her journey to self-discovery, but she overcomes them without much ado.
She is portrayed as wild, clever, who doesn’t care what the world says. And yet, the moment her heartbreaker puts a mirror up to her, she begins to change the direction of her life, fixing everything he points out is wrong with her. That and a few other nuances dilute the narrative and limit the scope the story really had.
The dialogues are decent, although there was plenty of room for them to be great. Throughout the film, Babli keeps saying that she is very funny, but the comic punches don’t work in every situation.
However, Babli Bouncer is a fast, light watch that doesn’t waste much time getting the story going. The film is well shot and neatly captures the essence of Haryana and Delhi. The tracks are decent and help move the story forward. The few scenes where Tamannah slips into action mode were well done. Tamannah Bhatia nails them with ease.
Among the performers, Tamannah is the one who really shines brightly. Her effort to speak like a Haryanvi local, her body language and the portrayal of her character’s naivety all indicate her potential to make it big.
Babli seems very comfortable acting and a more emotional thrust would only add silver lining to her performance. Sahil Vaid as Babli’s friend Kuku is fine but doesn’t seem like he has much to do. Saurabh Shukla works well on screen though he could have been given more work. Abhishek Saxena, as Babli’s love interest, could have bitten harder into his role.
Having delivered some smashing films in the past, Madhur Bhandarkar stands quite far from his own standards though he hasn’t lost his form. However, the film is still a brisk watch and has some light and sweet moments to carry you through its nearly two hour run time.
