Prey 2 might not have been officially confirmed by 20th Century Studios yet, but the end credits do give a hint that more is to come.
The new Predator movie takes us back to 1719 and centres on Comanche warrior Naru (Amber Midthunder) who wants to become a hunter. She’s not expected to as she’s a woman, but when the Predator arrives, Naru gets her chance to shine.
Talking to Digital Spy, director Dan Trachtenberg definitely seemed keen for a follow-up. “I’ve never stopped thinking about ways to make cool Predator movies from since I was a kid and throughout this whole experience, so it would be great to make more,” he noted.
Midthunder certainly seems up for the ride too, saying: “I’ve not heard anything, but I definitely had a great time on this one.”
So if we do get Prey 2, what can we expect from the sequel and how does the first movie set it up? Major spoilers are ahead if you haven’t seen Prey yet.
Prey 2 potential release date: When could Prey 2 be released?
As mentioned above, Prey 2 hasn’t been confirmed, so we don’t yet have an official release date for any sequel.
The first movie was filmed from May to September 2021 ahead of its release on August 5, 2022. A similar timeline (if the movie shoots around the same time as the first movie in 2023) could put a release in August 2024.
If a sequel does get confirmed, we should get a better idea of when we might expect it. We imagine that the movie will be released on Disney+ in the UK and Hulu in the US, like the first movie.
Watch this space and we’ll update you if there are any developments for the sequel.
Prey 2 cast: Who would be back for Prey 2?
The Predator racked up a healthy body count in the first movie, but it met its match in Amber Midthunder’s Naru, who we imagine will be back in the sequel if it happens.
Unfortunately for Naru, her brother Taabe (played by Dakota Beavers) was killed by the Predator. Her mother Aruka (played by Michelle Thrush) is still around though and could return in Prey 2.
The only other potential return is Julian Black Antelope’s War Chief Kehetu as we assume that if we do see Naru again, she’ll be a fully-fledged hunter after her exploits in the first movie which earned her the respect of the War Chief.
It’s equally possible that if we did get a sequel, it’ll follow an entirely new story or skip forward in the timeline. That’d be a shame though, as Midthunder has gained a lot of plaudits for her role as Naru.
Former basketball player Dane DiLiegro played the Predator in Prey and while this particular Predator was killed by Naru, DiLiegro could return to play a different Predator in the sequel.
Prey 2 plot: How does Prey set up a sequel?
Prey is largely a self-contained story and there isn’t a credit scene. However, at the end of the animated credits that retell the story of the movie, there’s a tease of Naru and her camp staring up at an incoming Predator ship.
It could just be a cool way to end the first part of the credits, or it could well be a sign that another Predator is on its way. After all, if Naru has proved herself such a worthy adversary, then other Predators will want to take their shot.
The other notable aspect of Prey’s ending that could be picked up on in the sequel is that Naru comes into possession of a flintlock pistol, one that we’ve seen before in Predator 2 when Greyback handed it to Mike Harrigan at the end of that movie.
We’d assume it was the same pistol due to the identical inscription (we’ve speculated some more here), so then it would have to find its way back to a Predator eventually, and we could see that play out in the sequel.
“There are a lot of exciting ideas for what could be next for the franchise,” Trachtenberg told Time Out. “The things that most excite me are the boldest swings and I think there’s scope to do other things that haven’t been done before.”
Prey 2 trailer: Any Prey 2 footage yet?
Unfortunately, as it’s not even been confirmed, any Prey 2 footage is a while away yet as filming isn’t even close to starting.
