How to check your PC is compatible with Windows 11

If you are unsure what your PC hardware is, or you want to be doubly sure you will be able to upgrade to Windows 11 when the time comes, there is a way to check it out.

PC Health Check has been around for a long time, but Windows 11 requires a monitoring tool launched in June. Unfortunately people were confused by their results, which forced Microsoft to withdraw the tool until recently.

But now PC Health Check is back, which means you can see if your PC can run Windows 11, or if the problem may be a problem.

Once the app is installed and unlocked, you need to find the Windows 11 banner at the top of the page and click Check Now.

The Health Check app will tell you immediately if your PC is running Windows 11 or not.

In my case, my two-year-old Huawei MateBook X Pro has no problems, and will be able to upgrade to Windows 11 when it is released. However because the PC Health Check app gives you an indication of each individual requirement, you can better see which computer your computer does not meet.

One thing listed in Windows 11 specs may confuse TPM. TPM stands for Trusted Platform Module, and is widely known as the primary security method for Windows PCs. It is usually built on business laptops and desktop machines, so it is not the kind of thing most people would consider when buying a new computer.

The Windows Health Check app will let you know if your PC does not have an active TPM, so once you have been given all the specifics you should not worry. However just because a PC Health Check App can’t detect TPM doesn’t mean you don’t have it.

Some mother boards, especially those delivered separately, may not be turned on by TPM. To make matters worse, some manufacturers, especially ASUS, have been updating the firmware of some of their older computers to make sure they are compatible with Windows 11 – even if Microsoft does not officially support them.

So be sure to read our guide on how to check if your Windows PC has a TPM 2.0 chip. Microsoft has also provided services to help you unlock any silent TPMs in the BIOS settings, if you are free to do so yourself.
